"I can do that"
A tribute to Colin W Martyn
Needed a train set like any other kid,
At Christmas it appeared. That’s what Dad did.
Needed an airport with planes and a tower,
“I can do that, give me an hour.”
A saw and a hammer, glue, hardboard a nail.
Dad always delivered, he’d never fail.
“I can do that, just wait, be patient, I’ll make it.”
If Dad made a promise, he’d never break it.
Needed music, as young kids all need.
At Christmas it appeared. That’s what Dad did.
Needed a lift, needed a ride to a dance,
“I can do that, give me a chance.”
A lift, a taxi at midnight, rain, snow thunder and hail.
Dad never faltered, dad did not fail.
“I’ll be there, at any hour, be patient, I’ll make it.”
If dad made a promise, he’d never break it.
Needed a holiday, as families all did,
In summer it appeared, that’s what Dad did.
Needed a caravan, farmhouse or tent.
Seven in an old
Cases and wind breaks, football, a picnic stove.
Without hardly halting, two hundred miles Dad drove.
Dad never complained, hardly ever said no.
If Dad said he’d do it it’d be done, just so!
Needed a hand, some cash or advice
It always appeared, Dad hardly thought twice.
At times he was hard, threw you a scare.
Dad had no favourites. Dad treated each fair.
From seven ‘til seven Dad was away.
Grafting and toiling for an honest day’s pay.
For Mum and five kids now no longer small,
Dad did the things he did, and he did them… for us all.
